Happy National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Persons!
Here at the Jimmy Pratt Memorial Outreach Centre, we would like to wish everyone a happy National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Persons, which is observed each year on October 1st.
It is the 15th anniversary of National Seniors Day in Canada—recognized since 2011 after the passing of the Celebrating Canada’s Seniors Act, while International Day of Older Persons was established by the United Nations in 1990.
Today is a day to honour the wisdom, lived experiences, and contributions of seniors & older people who helped shape our communities and make life more meaningful.
Newfoundland & Labrador has an especially high proportion of senior citizens in our province, and they face unique challenges with social isolation, loneliness, and affordability crises. We believe in fostering a sense of belonging, connection and engagement among seniors in our community through our weekly Seniors Inclusion Program, which takes place each Thursday and is barrier-free to attend.
